An individual earned a substantial sum from wagers on the downfall of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was officially announced, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from confidential information of the event.

Sudden Shift in Predictions

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the close of the month surged in the hours before President Donald Trump announced on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.

A particular user, which registered on the site recently and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a starting bet of $32.5K.

The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement

Market statistics shows that users assessed the probability of the president's removal at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of the Friday before the event.

But the odds had increased to 11% by late Friday night and spiked dramatically in the morning of the next day, indicating a sharp shift in positions right before the social media post was made.

"This specific wager has all the hallmarks of a transaction based on non-public details," commented an industry expert.

A handful of other traders also made significant sums from similar wagers.

Regulatory Scrutiny Intensifies

Some lawmakers are beginning to pay attention.

Proposed legislation introduced on Monday would prevent government employees from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a bet.

Market Background

Forecasting platforms have grown significantly in the past few years, with participants able to predict everything from sports to politics.

This sector faced scrutiny under the previous administration. Yet it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the event betting arena.

A company executive for Kalshi said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
