Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a approach that remains particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
