In a significant development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the deal was signed.

The September revolt was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the New Political Partnership

According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

Broader Government Discussions Underway

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with several major political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the period of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open atmosphere for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
